Microbial Signalling
Dr Mahmood Alam held a fantastic lecture on the mechanisms of microbial signalling. The content focuses on how bacteria perceive their surroundings and respond through two-component regulatory systems, which involve a sensor kinase and a response regulator. By using signal transduction, prokaryotes can alter their gene expression and protein production to adapt to environmental changes. The lecture also covered quorum sensing as a method of communication between microbes and touches upon the more complex environmental signalling found in parasites like malaria.
